Actor/comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to play the late rock icon Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic about the legendary singer.
The film, still without a title or a director, has been greenlighted by production company GK Films, which has hired Peter Morgan ("Frost/Nixon") to write the script. The film, including Cohen's star turn, has the support of Mercury's surviving bandmates. Mercury died of an HIV/AIDS-related illness in 1991.
The news has led to a very mixed response. Personally... my only minor problem with it is the major height difference. Mercury was 5'9 and Cohen is 5 inches taller. Also I will be interested to see how they will go about the vocals in the film. Will they dub Freddie's voice or will they require Cohen to take voice lessons that resemble Mercury's distinctive and difficult singing voice.
